When it comes to the performance of electric motors, there are many factors that can affect how well they perform. Some of these include load types, shaft speed levels, coupling with gears and belts, operating environments, temperature, vibration levels, lubrication, and more. All of these elements play a role in the overall effectiveness and daily operations of a motor, and the bearings within them.

The function of electric motor bearings is to support and locate the rotor, keep the airgap small and consistent, and transfer loads from the shaft to the motor. In order to perform these functions, they need to be able to work at both low and high speeds without increasing frictional losses.

If a bearing does not receive proper maintenance, it can suffer from premature wear and damage that can cause the motor to fail. These problems can include early pitting, medium-term frosting, and eventually fluting of the bearing raceway and roller surface. Bearing current is a phenomenon that occurs when the common-mode voltage between the inner and outer ring of the bearing exceeds the oil film breakdown voltage. This common-mode voltage generates a series of discharges that create an electrical current through the equivalent capacitance of the bearing. This current degrades the lubricating grease, creating an insufficient film between the bearing roller and raceway, and ultimately causing the bearing to fail.

There are a few things that can be done to prevent bearing current and its damaging effects. One is to use insulated bearings on the drive and non-drive ends of the motor. This will help to focus the effects of bearing current on the insulated bearing and reduce the chances of a failure occurring. Another option is to utilize hybrid bearings that can provide a lower friction and longer re-lubrication intervals versus standard bearings.
