Angular Contact Ball Bearing

An angular contact ball bearing has inner and outer raceways with spherical rolling elements that roll between them. The contact angle of the rolling element is inclined to the axial direction (a). This enables angular contact bearings to carry combined radial and axial loads. This type of bearing is generally used where a high speed and axial load capacity are required.

Angular contact bearings are available in single-row, double-row, and multi-row designs with open or sealed enclosures. The contact surfaces of the inner and outer rings are typically smooth and have high geometrical accuracy. In addition, the contact surface quality of the balls and the spherical rolling elements is optimized. This increases the load-carrying capability and service life of the bearing compared to standard single-row ball bearings.

The angular contact bearing is normally fitted with a solid retainer made of fiber-reinforced phenolic resin or metal alloy. These retainers have extremely good wear resistance and are suitable for use in harsh conditions. The bearing can also be supplied with a cage made of polyamide, brass, or sheet steel. The cage provides separation between the rolling elements and raceways to minimize friction between them.

It is possible to achieve a higher degree of load-carrying capability and accuracy with the help of special lubricants and different types of cages. Depending on the bearing application and operating conditions, this can reduce the noise level, increase the running accuracy and extend the working life of the bearing.

Bearings that are specially developed for use in applications with high speeds and temperatures can be marked with the suffix X-life. These are characterized by modified internal construction, optimized roughness and geometry of the contact surface of the ball-raceways and the spherical rolling elements, as well as by a more effective relubrication system. This enables the bearing to be run at higher speeds and under greater temperature extremes.

In order to ensure the correct functioning of angular contact ball bearings, it is important that the accuracy of the bearing seat on the shaft and in the housing corresponds to the tolerance class specified. The dimensional tables can be used to calculate the allowable axial shaft seat and housing seat tolerances for each size of the bearing.

It is recommended to use bearings with a solid-shaft locating washer or spacer ring and a housing-locating washer or collar. This helps to avoid misalignment and prevent damage to the bearings, as well as to protect the shaft and housing from scratches or other types of damage. This is particularly important in applications with dynamic load and vibration.
